What is a Hazardous Waste:
A waste material (solid, liquid or gas) that is no longer suitable for its original intended purpose, and is listed in 40 CFR 261 Subpart D, or has at least one of the following characteristics (per 40 CFR 261 subpart C):
| Ignitable: | flashpoint less than 140 degrees F |
| Reactive: | unstable, reacts violently with water, can explode |
| Corrosive: | pH less than or equal to 2.0, or greater than or equal to 12.5 |
| Toxic: | harmful or fatal if ingested or absorbed |
If an unused hazardous product in its original container is obsolete and won’t be used, it must be identified as a hazardous waste and properly managed and disposed of (this is referred to as a Hazardous Waste Determination).
Used Oil:
Used petroleum oil is not a hazardous waste according to regulations, but proper handling and disposal is still required.
Containers must be marked “USED OIL”
Must be recycled or disposed of by licensed/permitted business

Our policy is to remain within regulatory limits for Small Quantity Generators
Quantity limit, total storage on campus: 2,200 pounds (about 260 gallons)
